The adult human body has 7 bones in the neck (vertebrae, which are part of the spinal cord) and the hyoid bone. This accounts for less than 5% of the bones in the human body. The bones in the neck can be very fragile and if damaged can cause serious issues, including paralysis, long lasting and debilitating pain, or of course death. The 7 bones in the neck are usually called "cervical discs".
